Snow farm
Snow guarantee
A snow farm represents a key component in ensuring an early start to the winter season. By systematically storing the snow, we make it possible to prepare cross-country ski tracks already during the first cold days, regardless of the amount of new snowfall.
The snow farm is a sustainable solution for extending the winter season and ensuring stable conditions for training of top athletes, national teams, and recreational skiers as early as mid-November.
Sustainable and strategical solution
A snow farm is not merely a technical solution, but a thoughtful and long-term strategic investment. It represents a key element of stable winter season management and ensures high-quality conditions for training and competitions.
It enables:
-
less dependence on unpredictable weather conditions,
-
an earlier and more reliable start to the cross-country skiing season,
-
stable conditions for national teams, clubs, and competition organizers,
-
more efficient use of energy and natural resources.
How is the snow stored?
Every winter, approximately 15,000 to 25,000 m³ of snow is prepared and stored in Planica. At the end of the season, the snow is covered with several layers of protective felt, which acts as insulation and reduces melting during the summer months. The insulating layers of felt prevent direct exposure to the sun and heat, allowing a large amount of snow to remain usable until fall.
Based on experience from previous years, between 60 and 70% of the snow is preserved over the summer, ensuring a reliable start to the new season. When temperatures drop (expected in early November), the stored snow is transported to the cross-country tracks and prepared for training and competitions.
